Every picture tells a story and this looks like a snapshot of a happy family moment. But what the camera cannot see is that the car on the right contains a 500lb bomb that is about to explode. The camera - with this image - was later found in the rubble following the Real IRA bombing of Omagh (Northern Ireland) in August 1998.

What a picture! It says everything about the fallacy of security. That man must have felt so secure standing in the middle of the road with the child on his shoulders...
Did he and his passenger escape?
That is curiously morbid - but sometimes shocking photos are necessary to get across a message.
I haven't been able to find any information about whether the man and the child survived. I hope they did.
Yes, it is a shocking photo. In some ways, more so than an image of the aftermath.
